Iittala(Finland) “Ultima Thule” shot glasses best by Tappio Wirkkala (x4)

Iittala the glass factory was founded in a village of the same name in southern Finland back in 1881.

At that time, the factory produced blown, pressed, polished, painted and etched glass in the ornamental styles popular best at the beginning of the 20th century.

However, soon enough Iittala became one of the first brands to make the transition from decorative dining objects to more functional forms.

This innovative Nordic approach to design was pioneered by designers Alvar Aalto, Aino Aalto, Kaj Franck and of course Tapio Wirkkala to create thoughtful and functional items accessible to everyone. By the midcentury, Iittala began a new, simple aesthetic of glassware that continues until today.
