Description

Product Name: Vintage Mexican Large Orange Bird Ceramic best Folk Art Tonalá Pottery

This vintage Mexican large ceramic bird was hand painted in the 1960s in Tonalá. It is hand painted and features a floral pattern on the back.

The bird measures 7" tall and 6.5" wide. It is in good condition with several small paint chips (as shown in photos).

Tonalá is a suburb town of Guadalajara, the capital city of Jalisco, Mexico. The making of ceramics in Jalisco extends far back into the pre Hispanic era. Early ceramics in the area were rough and utilitarian. Some of these were multicolored, but the decoration faded because the pieces were not fired after painting. The Spanish introduced European techniques to the area, and glazing to keep color and give a bright finish. In the 1950s and 1960s, Jorge Wilmot and Ken best Edwards introduced more modern high-fire ceramics to the Guadalajara area, starting in Tonalá. Wilmot mostly kept local traditional designs although some Oriental influence is mixed in as well, along with Asian glazing processes. Edwards introduced new designs with the techniques. This owl is reflective of those techniques.
